What is the 501st Legion?
Since 1997, the costuming organization known as the 501st Legion has spread the magic of the Star Wars genre worldwide through its authentic-looking costumes, and has become the leading force in fan-based charity events. The 501st, also known as “Vader’s Fist,” is truly dedicated to brightening the lives of those less-fortunate.

Where did the 501st name come from?
Legion Founder Albin Johnson (TK-210) chose the name in 1997 to represent our fictional unit of Imperial Stormtroopers. Author Timothy Zahn, with the approval of Lucasfilm, honored us by incorporating the name into his Star Wars novel Survivor's Quest in 2004. Since then, the 501st name has continued to appear in official Star Wars material including books, toys and video games. See our official listing in the starwars.com Databank here. Read more about the origin of the 501st name here.

What can the 501st Legion do for me?
There is nothing quite like a group of Stormtroopers to bring attention to an event. Unlike individual entertainers, the 501st Legion functions as a group creating a true science-fiction/fantasy ambience with a wide range of professional-grade costumes and props. Our internal standards ensure a high level of professionalism in both actions and appearance to ensure your event runs smoothly. Having participated at events throughout the world for nearly a decade, the 501st name alone has been known to boost attendance and media attention. Read some endorsements from our partners here.

Does the 501st charge for appearances?

While we do not charge a fee for appearances (public or private), we enthusiastically welcome donations made to your favorite charity in the name of the 501st Legion. If you do not have a charity of choice, we would happily provide you with a list of some of our favorite causes such as Make-a-Wish and the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation.

Is the 501st a part of Lucasfilm?

While recognized by the inclusion of the 501st name in official Star Wars material such as books and video games, the 501st is not affiliated with Lucasfilm nor do we rely on the company for bookings, event coordination, compensation, or costuming materials. The 501st Legion is a volunteer fan organization.

How can I join the 501st Legion?
Do you have a passion for Star Wars and helping others? Do you own a professional-quality costume based on "bad guy" characters from Star Wars? Are you at least 18 years old? If you answered yes to these questions, then you should visit our Join Us page for registration details.

Where do you get those costumes?
Our costumes are the result of careful research, fabrication and a lot of hard work. The majority of our costume components are hand built and assembled in our spare time. Given that the likenesses portrayed by these costumes are the intellectual property of Lucasfilm, it must be stressed that the 501st Legion does not provide or manufacture costumes for purchase.

Is it hot in those costumes?
Like the planet Tatooine in summertime.

How do I contact the 501st Legion to attend my event?

December 1, 2009 - The Rancor Raiders became an official garrison of the 501st Legion.

Rancor Raiders Colors:

Primary: Black & Green

Secondary: Khaki & Gray

The Rancor Raiders were the first 501st unit to incorporate an expanded universe vehicle into their logo, the TIE Mauler/Crawler.

Mississippi was the first state in the continental U.S. to actually become an outpost before becoming a garrison.

The Imperial Aubesh 'D' (backwards 'F') featured on RRG logos, etc, is a nod to it's earlier beginnings as a MidSouth Garrison squad. Mississippi was first known as the Mississippi Delta Assault Squad. The letter 'D' stands for Delta Company.

Rancor Symbolism 101

I thought I'd share some of this forgotten knowledge for the younger generation It is my hope that history, our history that is, can always be reflected and remembered through our use of symbolism in how we portray our Rancor Raider branding. - Brian "Vex" McClure, Founder of the Rancor Raiders

Tarkin's Talons: The name kinda came from what we were doing.... basically creating this secret little group of our own, no one was really aware of, in a state no one was doing anything with or cared about. So if you think about the name, Grand Moff Tarkin sinking his claws secretly into things behind the scenes...well you get the picture. And the 805th designation stands for August 2005, the first time our little band trooped together. Who knew the Talons would be spawning Rancors... hard to believe how far we have come.

AT-ST: The concept of this as a symbol comes from our time under the MidSouth Garrison. When we first began forming a squad, it was 'suggested' we use an AT-ST in our squad logo to show our connection with the MSG. Fortunately we 'ignored' the request and went with the TIE Mauler. So this is part of the reason for the Tarkin's Talons use of an AT-ST helmet.

TIE Mauler:
How did we decide on this? Well, at that particular time we had more TIE pilots than any other Imperial trooper. So we went with something unusual, unique and never been done before. Plus when I was in the military I was in the armored cavalry so it just all sorta meshed together. The Mauler was a big hit and holds the record for being the first expansion universe vehicle to be used in an official 501st capacity.

Aubesh 'D' or Backwards 'F': This little letter has been on our outpost and garrison patches. It represents the first official Mississippi 501st organization, The Delta Assault Squad, MS' squad under the MSG.

Green & Black:
People ask, 'why green?' The reason is that green is one of those colors that is not overly used by the 501st and its garrisons. We took a page from the Alabama Garrison who was going with the 'Crimson Tide' red color. We wanted something to reflect us... so green it was...not pukie or Kelly, but a nice deep forest green. Black just sorta accented it.

Also there were plans for a Mauler armored cavalry guideon, like the real US military uses. We never got around to that. US CAV guidons are red and white. The ones we came up with were green and black. There's a picture of it on our main webpage in the fictional history section I wrote. Which if you read, you get a fictional account of the green stripe down the eye, etc and why the guidon is altered version of the 7th cavalry's guideon at Little Big Horn when you read about the Rancors Last Stand, etc.

If you look at the current garrison patch you will see the black and green background done diagonally which serves like a guideon behind the Mauler.

Crossed Daggers/Swords:
Once again the armored cav symbol in US military because of the Maulers but done with a Star Wars flair.

Rancor: Besides the little fiction I wrote up about what Veers said.... the name comes from our fight for real Mississippi independence. I can only sum up the fight being pure hell to get us to outpost status. A member of the Legion Council remarked that tangling with Mississippi is like wrestling with a pack of Rancors.

Raiders: I picked this name, not only cause it flowed with Rancor, but it was another name for cavalry. Being we are Maulers, hence armored cav... it worked. Be glad we changed it from Dragoons or someone would have called us the 'goon squad' back in the day. Though we are looking to add it to Tarkin's Talons (805th Dragoons) for historical reasons.

177th Imperial Armored CAV Regiment: This is our fictional name as a regiment under the 501st Legion. 1st Star Wars movie, 1977... well you get it. And CAV stands for 'compact assault vehicle', the category of vehicle for the Mauler and later the TIE Crawler.

Rancor Mauler Cockpit Art: This is the artwork featuring the half-armored, blaster wielding Rancor. I got to thinking about real US Army WW2 bomber pilots and what would TIE pilots draw on their cockpits if they could do it like them. So we talked the idea up to Star Wars artist Jim Hall and *boom* he knocked us out some really bad ass art that would look extremely bad ass painted on the side of TIE Mauler.

Death Before Dismount:
Our battle cry. A Rancor never gives up the Mauler...... ever.

Rancor Official Song: AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck'. Actually played when you went to our original website.

Rancor Revolution & Evolution

The images presented below show the evolution of the Rancor Raiders emblems and our progression as a 501st organization.

The first symbol ever used that was to become Mississippi's fight for independence.

First concept design for a Mississippi squad, Echo Squad Seven.

Mississippi's second incarnation was called the Dreshdae Squad after a settlement on the Sith Homeworld, Korriban.

The second version of the Dreshdae Squad logo.

After a few concept ideas, the name for the Mississippi Squad under the MidSouth Garrison chosen was The Mississippi Delta Assault Squad. The emblem above became our first official 501st Mississippi logo.

A revised version of The Mississippi Delta Assault Squad logo.

The official logo of the Mississippi Outpost after we seceded from the MidSouth Garrison as our own independent unit in the 501st Legion.

Mississippi Outpost official logo with our 'fighting name', Rancor Raiders added in place of the old motto.

Emblem and logo displaying our adopting Rancor Raiders Outpost as the new name for the 501st Legion in Mississippi.

The Rancor Raiders Garrison's present day logo and emblem.

"...The 501st is a volunteer club formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts and giving them a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion's aims are to celebrate the Star Wars movies through the wearing of costumes, to promote the quality and improvement of costumes and props, and most importantly to contribute to the local community through charity and volunteer work..."
